BILL SUMMARY
- Designates the month of January as "Fibromyalgia Awareness Month."
CONTENT AND OPERATION
Fibromyalgia
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fibromyalgia is a disorder of unknown etiology characterized by widespread pain, abnormal pain processing, sleep disturbance, fatigue and often psychological distress. Those with fibromyalgia may also experience morning stiffness, numbness of hands and feet, headaches or migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, problems with memory and thinking, or painful menstrual periods and other pain syndromes.

To enact section 5.2239 of the Revised Code to designate January as "Fibromyalgia Awareness Month."
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF OHIO:
Section 1. That section 5.2239 of the Revised Code be enacted to read as follows:
Sec. 5.2239. The month of January is designated as "Fibromyalgia Awareness Month."

Text of Resolution: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING):
(THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING):
| WHEREAS, Millions of people in the United States have | 3 |
| fibromyalgia, a medical disorder for which there is no known cure; | 4 |
| and | 5 |
| WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness that causes | 6 |
| debilitating pain and fatigue in women, men, and children of all | 7 |
| ethnicities; and | 8 |
| WHEREAS, Patients with this illness often have to learn to | 9 |
| live with widespread pain throughout their bodies, extreme | 10 |
| fatigue, sleep disorders, migraine headaches, and impairment of | 11 |
| memory and concentration; and | 12 |
| WHEREAS, Patients with fibromyalgia often have a number of | 13 |
| co-existing conditions, which may include chronic myofascial pain, | 14 |
| irritable bowel syndrome, temporomandibular joint disorder, | 15 |
| environmental sensitivities, anxiety, and depression; and | 16 |
| WHEREAS, Increased awareness and expanded knowledge of the | 17 |
| realities of living with fibromyalgia and its impact on patients' | 18 |
| quality of life will allow the community to better support people | 19 |
| who struggle with the challenges of this chronic-pain illness; and | 20 |
| WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and a multi-disciplinary approach to | 21 |
| treatment reduces severity of symptoms; and | 22 |
| WHEREAS, The National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain | 23 |
| Association; Kevin Hackshaw, M.D., Associate Professor of Medicine | 24 |
| at The Ohio State University College of Medicine; E. Michelle Lee, | 25 |
| host of The Exceptions to the Rules radio program; and other | 26 |
| groups around the country have joined together to promote | 27 |
| fibromyalgia awareness and support; now therefore be it | 28 |
| RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly | 29 |
| of the State of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, declare May 12, | 30 |
| 2014, as "National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day" in Ohio; and be it | 31 |
| further | 32 |
| RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly | 33 |
| authenticated copies of this resolution to the news media of Ohio. |
