A RESOLUTION
1 Designating May 12, 1999, as "Fibromyalgia Awareness Day" in
2 Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder manifested by
4 widespread muscular pain, fatigue and insomnia; and
5 WHEREAS, The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, but an injury
6 or a trauma that affects the central nervous system may trigger
7 it; and
8 WHEREAS, The American Medical Association, the World Health
9 Organization, the American College of Rheumatology and the
10 National Institutes of Health recognize fibromyalgia as a
11 painful and debilitating disorder of the central nervous system;
12 and
13 WHEREAS, Available data suggest that approximately 3.7
14 million people in the United States have fibromyalgia; and
15 WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia primarily occurs in women of
16 childbearing age but also may affect children, the elderly and
17 men; and
1 WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is difficult to diagnose because many
2 of its symptoms mimic those of other diseases; and
3 WHEREAS, The effects of fibromyalgia gradually result in a
4 significant reduction in physical activity because of muscular
5 pain and fatigue; and
6 WHEREAS, Treatment for fibromyalgia is comprehensive, and
7 patients may benefit from a combination of exercise, medication,
8 physical therapy and relaxation; and
9 WHEREAS, There needs to be greater awareness and
10 understanding of fibromyalgia; and
11 WHEREAS, "Fibromyalgia Awareness Day" is observed on May 12th
12 each year nationally and internationally; therefore be it
13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania designate May 12,
14 1999, as "Fibromyalgia Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania and urge
15 all Pennsylvanians to become aware and seek a better
16 understanding of fibromyalgia.

A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the month of May 2000 as "Arthritis Awareness Month"
2 in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, Arthritis refers to more than 100 different diseases
4 that cause pain, swelling and limited movement in joints and
5 connective tissue throughout the body, the most prevalent forms
6 of which are osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid
7 arthritis; and
8 WHEREAS, Nearly 42 million Americans, representing one in six
9 people, have arthritis and nearly two-thirds of those people are
10 women; and
11 WHEREAS, Arthritis is one of the most common chronic health
12 problems and the number one cause of limitation in movement in
13 the United States; and
14 WHEREAS, Arthritis costs the United States economy $65
15 billion per year in medical care and lost wages; and
16 WHEREAS, The specific causes of arthritis are not yet known
1 for most forms of the disease, but there are many things that
2 can be done to reduce the impact of arthritis on everyday life;
3 and
4 WHEREAS, The key to reducing the impact of arthritis is early
5 diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to the needs of each
6 individual; and
7 WHEREAS, Most treatment programs include a combination of
8 medication, exercise, rest, use of heat and cold, joint
9 protection techniques and sometimes surgery; therefore be it
10 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 2000 as "Arthritis
11 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and urge residents of this
12 Commonwealth to be aware of the seriousness of this disease and
13 to seek appropriate treatment to minimize its impact on their
14 lives.

A RESOLUTION
1 Designating May 12, 2002, as "Fibromyalgia Awareness Day" in
2 Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, An estimated 10 million people in the United States,
4 including 6% to 8% of the population of our country, and
5 millions of people worldwide, have been diagnosed with
6 fibromyalgia, a disease for which there is no known cause or
7 cure; and
8 WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness increasing at
9 epidemic rates, which causes fatigue and debilitating pain in
10 women, men and children of all ages and races; and
11 WHEREAS, Patients with this illness often have to learn to
12 live with widespread pain throughout their bodies, extreme
13 fatigue, sleep disorders, stiffness and weakness, migraine
1 headaches, numbness and tingling, and impairment of memory and
2 concentration; and
3 WHEREAS, It often takes an average of five years to receive a
4 diagnosis of fibromyalgia, and medical professionals frequently
5 are inadequately educated on fibromyalgia diagnosis and
6 treatment; and
7 WHEREAS, It is necessary that we recognize the medical
8 research demonstrating biochemical abnormalities in people with
9 fibromyalgia; and
10 WHEREAS, Fibromyalgia in children and young adults presents
11 unique challenges for this population who suffer not only from
12 the symptoms of this illness but also from the lack of
13 understanding and social acceptance; and
14 WHEREAS, People with fibromyalgia face discrimination from
15 employers, friends, family and the judicial system while dealing
16 with the ongoing stress of living with an unpredictable disease
17 and an uncertain future; and
18 WHEREAS, Employers could support their employees with
19 fibromyalgia by making adaptations to the work environment so
20 that people with fibromyalgia could continue to function at work
21 and not be forced to file for disability; and
22 WHEREAS, The National Fibromyalgia Association and other
23 fibromyalgia support organizations around our country have
24 joined together to promote fibromyalgia awareness and support,
25 including improved education, diagnosis, research and treatment;
26 and
27 WHEREAS, Understanding this illness will help guarantee hope
28 for a better future for people with fibromyalgia; therefore be
29 it
30 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

1 needs of these chronically ill people and designate May 12,
2 2002, as "Fibromyalgia Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania and urge
3 all of our citizens to support the search for a cure and assist
4 those individuals and families who deal with this devastating
5 disease on a daily basis.
