Leaders Against Pain 2012 Training Program Requirements

To attend Leaders Against Pain you must submit an application. Leaders Against Pain attendees will be selected by staff at the National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain Association. The application deadline is October 3, 2012, at 11:59 pm EST. All scholarship winners will be notified by email or U.S. postal mail on or before October 5, 2012, at 11:59 pm EST.

Scholarships strictly cover the training program along with full breakfast and lunch Wednesday and Thursday. The program is valued at $1,400. All travel and incidental costs are to be paid by program participants. To assist with minimizing travel costs a Leaders Against Pain special conference rate of $199 (+ taxes) per night at the conference hotel, the Marriott Renaissance Washington, DC. Upon notification that you received a scholarship to participate in the conference, you will receive information on how to reserve your room at this rate. If you are interested in sharing the cost of the room with a fellow conference participant, we will connect you with a participant who would like to room share.

The hotel is five miles from Ronald Reagan National airport in the heart of downtown Washington, DC. The capitol, subway and many attractions are within walking distance. For more details on the hotel please visit the Marriott website.

As part of the training, conference participants are required to schedule a minimum of one meeting with one of their state legislators or state legislators’ health advisory staff while in DC for LAP*. We encourage you to schedule meetings with more than one office and will provide tips for arranging this meeting if you have never done this before. The purpose of the meetings will be for you to introduce yourself to the legislator or staff member and share that you are a resource for them on issues impacting the fibromyalgia and chronic pain community. We suggest the meetings occur on Friday, November 9 after the training. This way you will have the benefit of the training before your meeting, and we will provide you with handouts to take to your legislator. If you can only meet with your legislator or staff member before the training, please let us know, and we will try to provide support in advance of the training.

The conference is a dynamic and rigorous training program designed to equip you with tools and skills for your current or new work in advocacy and leadership for the fibromyalgia and chronic pain community in your city, state and country. We require that participants be able to attend the full program. We will cover ground quickly, and it is not possible to “catch up” participants who have missed portions of their training. The majority of people who have attended Leaders Against Pain have been people with fibromyalgia. The majority of this year’s presenters have fibromyalgia or another chronic pain condition. We do not want anyone’s health to suffer as a consequence of attending, so we ask candidates to strongly consider the program agenda and requirements of training (and after training) when applying.

Participants will be required to do some homework before coming to the class. Homework will consist of reading and downloading course materials to a computer if you are bringing a laptop or printing course materials to bring with you. Also, participants are asked to schedule meetings with their state legislators or state legislators’ health advisory staff members before they arrive as described previously.*

Acceptances must be returned by October 10, 2012, at 11:59 PM EST.  Applicants on the wait-list will be notified on October 11 if a spot is available to them for the training.

The fibromyalgia and chronic pain community needs leaders. We thank you in advance for your willingness to step forward and lead.
