National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain Association to participate in unveiling of historic IOM (Institute of Medicine) report on pain
LOGAN, UT—(June 28, 2011)—Jan Chambers, president and founder of the National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain Association and a member of the Pain Care Forum Subcommittee on Training and Education, will participate in the release of a report on the findings and recommendations from an IOM committee convened to identify barriers to pain care and ways to overcome these obstructions.
The report, Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Treatment, and Research presents, will be released on Wednesday, June 29, at a one-hour public briefing starting at 11 a.m. EDT in Conference Room B of the 20 F Street Conference Center, 20 F St., N.W., Washington, D.C. Those who cannot attend may participate through a live audio webcast.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is the official group that is weighing which pain conditions are most deserving of attention from Congress and the National Institutes of Health.
As the only member of the Pain Care Forum representing the fibromyalgia community, Chambers previously testified to the IOM Committee of the need for advanced research funding to bring about new understanding of the common underlying causes of fibromyalgia and overlapping conditions.
“The IOM’s historical report on pain deserves widespread attention and our support to implement the forthcoming IOM recommendations to Congress,” urged Chambers. “Chronic pain affects up to 50 million American women with costs of up to $80 billion annually. The NFMCPA commends and adds its voice to organized efforts to effect changes that will reduce societal and economic costs of chronic pain. By mandate from the U.S. Congress, the National Institutes of Health will respond to these recommendations by developing the type and amount of pain research for many years to come.
“We are grateful to the many people with fibromyalgia who have already come forward with their stories to help us achieve our goals of increased research by the NIH and increased education for doctors who are treating patients with FM and related pain conditions.”
As a member of the Pain Care Forum, Chambers said she will continue to advocate in person and actively participate in similar proceedings to ensure that the voice of the Fibromyalgia and overlapping conditions community is always heard.
Non profit organizations needing a hard copy of the report can be included in the NFMCPA's order. Requests may be emailed to: info@fmcpaware.org and must be received by Wednesday, June 29 4:00 PM EDT. Cost of shipping only if ordered in bulk with first printing.
