Does Emotional Recovery after Auto Accidents Influence Chronic Pain?

Presented at the 2014 American Pain Society Meeting, research led by Dr. Samuel McLean at UNC at Chapel Hill showed there are several personal predictors of better and poorer outcomes after motor vehicle collisions.  Better psychological assessment and preventative interventions could reduce the transition of acute pain into long-term disability.  What are those predictors?  Read more...

Glia - What Does It Do in the Brain?

(Part 1 of 3-part series)  Learning to live life with a chronic pain illness is not for the faint of heart.  It takes personal fortitude and determination along with an inquisitive mind and self-empowerment.  And knowledge about the chronic pain illness is the first and foremost element in helping a person regain control of his or her life.  Research shows the relevance of changes in brain chemistry and glia cells in the spinal cord affecting symptom severity and the sickness response (a nausea that overcomes a person who hurts so much they are physically ill).  Read more...

Targiniq ER Approved by the FDA for Round the Clock Pain Relief

In a press release issued on Thursday, July 24, 2014, the Food & Drug Administration announced the approval of Targiniq ER, a new combination pain pill from Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, designed to discourage abuse by painkiller addicts.  FDA regulators approved the drug for daily, round-the-clock pain that does not respond to other medications.

Targiniq is an extended release formulation tablet that combines oxydodone - the active ingredient in OxyContin - with the drug Naloxone.  If abusers crush the tablets for snorting or injecting, Naloxone blocks the euphoric effects of oxycodone, making the drug more difficult to abuse.  Naloxone is currently used to reverse the overdose effects of opioids which are highly addictive pain killing drugs, including morphine, methadone, codeine and others.

Raise Fibromyalgia Awareness All Year Long!
September is Pain Awareness Month

Even though May 12, National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day 2014 has passed, it doesn't mean that you have to wait until next year to raise fibromyalgia awareness in your local community.

Remember to think outside the box and realize that if a group such as your church or car club or garden club, or another local organization you belong to is planning a group picnic or BBQ, you can always ask if you can set up an information table about fibromyalgia.  You can get your free fibromyalgia event kit from the NFMCPA office by just going to the fmcpaware.org website. For more ideas about how you can raise fibromyalgia awareness and get your kit click here.

Fibromyalgia Research Week
You Asked and We Listened!
Research Week, August 6-13, 2014

In March 2014 the NFMCPA conducted a Community Needs Survey.  Over 1700 people responded, and the results helped inform the NFMCPA team on how to better meet the needs of the people they serve.  Top requests were:  (1) more research information, including where to participate in studies; and (2) more reports about scientific studies and their outcomes.  In response, the new section called "News from the Research Front" was added to the NFMCPA Advocate Voice Newsletter where at least three research studies are reviewed.  We encourage readers to visit the NFMCPA website to learn about other research not listed on ClinicalTrials.gov, such as surveys and the "Light Sensitivity in FM" study where Dr. Kim Jones of OHSU is currently asking for personal videos from NFMCPA constituents to help with her research.

In this context we are excited to announce Research Week, August 6-13, 2014, a new NFMCPA program that offers more FM and chronic pain scientific information including new research proposals that we've been asked to help with, how and where to volunteer for those studies, information about researchers and their unique areas of study and the outcomes. The NFMCPA will continue to update visitors to the website  and readers of both the Advocate Voice Newsletter
and Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain LIFE magazine about research/study announcements and resulting published research articles.   Read more about the unique ways you can help with research.
LEADERS AGAINST PAIN SPOTLIGHT
Leaders Against Pain Action Network members BJ and Sabrina Numann live in the Louisville, Kentucky area. They have three grown children: Steven, 25, Heather, 22 and Jacob 19.  TIPS FOR LIVING BETTER
The Role of Spirituality in Healing

Research shows that patients want their physicians to be aware of their spiritual beliefs, to ask about those beliefs, and to include spiritual issues in their medical care.  These patients felt that this knowledge would positively affect their relationship with their provider and would change their medical treatment in a positive way.  How to help start the conversation?  A few facts may help.   Read more...

The Importance of Drug Testing to People Suffering with Chronic Pain

When pain becomes chronic from a slip and fall on ice, a person seeking medical attention and pain relief can learn that biases exist about people with chronic pain.  In particular, opioid medications often are prescribed without a formal risk assessment.  After 25 years of clinical practice, Dr. Steve Passik became a person with chronic pain and "realized that patients are often on their own when it comes to the assessment and management of addiction risk in these situations."   How does drug testing help patients make treatment decisions?  Read more...

Why Does Mommy Hurt?

 Newly released book!
Two years ago, a young mother had a problem.  Her son was beginning to ask questions like "why does mommy hurt?" and she didn't have the tools to explain her illness to her two-year old ... and neither did the library ... or Amazon.com ... or, apparently, anyone else!  She was shocked and disappointed to find nothing on the market written for the children of people suffering from chronic pain, and  " invisible illness" and the most common health problem in the world today.  So, she decided to write one herself!  Read more...
ADVOCACY UPDATES
DEA and Doctors Working Together

In recent Advocate Voice Newsletter articles we have discussed the impact of the unintended consequences on patients and physicians from the actions of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding opioid pain medications and chronic pain patients' rights to treatment.  A unique program, Share the Risk, involves DEA working with healthcare professionals in San Diego to help ensure prescription pain medication accessibility and other therapeutic options for people in chronic pain.  This interdisciplinary approach to medical treatment of chronic pain patients (now considered to be the most challenging patients in medicine) is still evolving.   The goal is to bring together various resources in the community:  clinicians, representatives from biotech/pharmaceutical industry, and the DEA to address the many groups affected by pain and pain management.  Read more at www.practicalpainmanagement.com/resources/ethics/dea-doctors-working-together
