Book of the Month
NFMCPA recommends this book
"In this book, I will argue that lack of adequate pain control is one of the most urgent health problems in America. In my research over the last five years, I have interviewed nearly 200 scientists and physicians, as well as countless patients, a few lawyers, and a handful of government officials.

Pain Sensitivity is Related to Grey Matter

Pain sensitivity related to grey matter

Pain is an extremely personal experience that

varies substantially among individuals. In a study created at Wake Forest School of Medicine and printed in the December 2013 issue of PAIN, a group of scientists investigated the relationship between grey matter density across the whole brain and interindividual differences in pain sensitivity in 116 healthy volunteers (62 women and 54 men).

Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to map the brain and record variances. VBM is a neuroimaging analysis technique that allows investigation of focal differences in brain anatomy, using the statistical approach of statistical parametric mapping.  Read more...

Pain Patients Rights to Treatment

The United States Food and Drug Administration, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Office of National Drug Control Policy have declared that the United States is in the midst of a prescription opioid abuse epidemic; 17,000 overdose related deaths in 2012.  Appropriately, they and other federal agencies have taken action.

However, the unanticipated result of their actions is that people in pain, who should be administered pain medications based on their physicians' recommendations, are being kept from adequate pain relief by pharmacies that in some instances have been filling the same prescriptions for more than ten years.  .Read more...

Animal Assisted Therapy

If you have fibromyalgia, you know there's no quick fix-no pill, procedure, or therapy that quickly makes symptoms disappear. Fibromyalgia is a condition that relies heavily on combining many types of therapies together, including medications, exercise, nutritional, and non-drug therapies. Most people with fibromyalgia use complementary and alternative therapies that are designed to supplement and boost the benefits from traditional medicine. A survey from the Mayo Clinic found that the complementary therapies most commonly used for fibromyalgia are exercise, spiritual healing, massage, chiropractic treatment, and supplements.
